There are many beautiful campsites along the North Umpqua River in the area where we raft. Except for a few large group sites at Horseshoe Bend and near Steamboat, none of the campgrounds take reservations. Horseshoe Bend is the most popular, but all of them are great. John Day Fossil Beds National Monument 30 to 40 million year old fossil beds expose brilliantly colored volcanic deposits and contain one of the world's greatest collections of early mammal specimans. Take an interpretive hike, have a picnic or check out the museum.

Jordan Valley "Big Loop" Rodeo Rough, wild and in the tradition of the old west this rodeo draws cowboys from all over the west. Held the third weekend in May. Located in Jordan Valley, Oregon.
Malheur National Wildlife Refuge 187,000 acreas of habitat including wetlands, riparian area, meadows and uplands offer prime wildlife viewing. The refuge has over 320 species of birds and 58 species of mammals. Located just south of Burns, Oregon.
Silver City, Idaho Ghost Town An authentic old-west town. May be difficult to get to in the spring. Located 60 slow miles east of Rome.

Hells Canyon National Recreation Area This very impressive canyon is the deepest in North America offering hiking, scenic viewpoints, wildlife and solitude. Located south of Lewiston.
Wallowa Lake State Park Surrounded by snow-capped mountains this park offers hiking, horseback riding, camping, canoeing and abundant wildlife. Located near the town of Joseph, famous for its bronze foundry. Two hours south of Lewiston.
Bitterroot National Forest The 1.6 million acre forest contains mountain peaks, wildlife including grizzly bears and wolves and the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness which is the largest wilderness area in the lower 48 states.
Clearwater Historical Museum This museum displays over 4000 photographs and artifacts from the Lewis and Clark Expedition and of the Nez Perce Indians. In Orofino, east of Lewiston on US Hwy 12.
Idaho Repertory Theatre This theatre is one of the longest running professional summer theatres in the Pacific Northwest. Located in Moscow, north of Lewiston on US Hwy 95.
Nez Perce National Historical Park More than 38 separate sites scattered throughout Oregon and Idaho make up the park. An interpretive center near Spalding provides insight into the culture.
