A North Umpqua River trip is perfect for combining with visit to Crater Lake National Park.  Well off the beaten track, the Umpqua delivers one of the most exciting and scenic outdoor adventures the Oregon Cascades have to offer.

Our 2-day trip explores 30 exciting miles over the course of two days between Boulder Flat Campground and Susan Creek Campground. Dozens of rapids provide plenty of excitement and the scenery is "post-card" perfect. Experience the crystal clear waters that cascade through one of Oregon's most pristine canyons.

What's it like?

A 2-day trip on the North Umpqua River is different from every other multi-day trip Ouzel offers. Unlike our other rivers, all of the campgrounds along the Umpqua are accessible by vehicle. We are not traveling downriver in a self-contained group with large equipment rafts. Instead we select a riverside "base-camp" from which we run two, full-day trips.  A typical itinerary involves meeting at the launch site for the lower section of the river on the first morning. We'll run the lower section first, saving the more exciting upper section for the second day. At the end of the first day we'll return to the launch site to collect guests' vehicles and continue on to our campsite. The guides prepare dinner and we enjoy an evening around the campfire. On the second day we'll run the more exciting upper section of the river.  It is not uncommon for us to add additional guests to each day of the trip.

Where: Gravel Bin Boat Launch
The Gravel Bin Boat Launch Is located 40 miles east of Roseburg on HWY 138 between mile markers 39 and 40.

If we have not heard from you the trip will depart Gravel Bin when ready. If you are lost or will be late please let us know.  Please note that cell service is poor or non-existent in this area.

What to Pack

  • Visor, Cap, or Sun Hat (must fit under helmet)
  • Sunglasses (w/strap)
  • Swimsuit or board shorts
  • Synthetic top (Rash Guard, Hydro Silk, Under Armour, etc.) The Umpqua is a chilly river and cotton clothing should be avoided.
  • Rafting Shoes: Sandals w/heel strap or sneakers – no bare feet, Crocs or flip flops.
  • Lip Balm (with SPF) & Sunscreen
  • Waterproof Camera
  • Water Bottle (Important! You will be able to refill your bottle from our water cooler).
  • Non-cotton clothing is crucial for being comfortable on the river. Ouzel will provide paddle jackets and pants, neoprene booties and wetsuits if conditions warrant.  This does not
  • Dry bags will be provided for items you would like to keep accessible during the day such as sun screen and extra clothing
  • Camping is at a regular forest service campground with flush toilets and running water. Your vehicle will be parked at the campsite, so there is no limitation on what you can bring for camp.
  • Electronic Devices. Please do not bring speakers or other noise-making devices on the trip. Headphones are fine. No drones.

How the trip starts

  • Orientation & Itinerary

All North Umpqua River rafting trips meet at the Gravel Bin Boat Ramp at 10:00 a.m.  Most 2-day trips will launch from here for the first day of rafting on the lower section of the river.  We'll conduct the safety briefing once everyone is properly attired.  Since we are driving to camp, your personal and camping gear stays in your vehicle.  In the afternoon we'll return everyone to Gravel Bin to collect cars and continue on to our campsite for the evening.  On the morning of the second day a short shuttle takes us to the launch site for the upper (and more exciting) section of the river. At the end of the day, we'll return to our campsite and guests may depart at their leisure.

What Ouzel Will Provide

  • Meals & Dietary Restrictions

All meals beginning with lunch on the first day to lunch on the last day are included. Snacks are always available. Nobody goes hungry on an Ouzel Trip!

Our menus are designed to be flexible in order to accommodate vegetarians and other dietary restrictions. Most dishes are made largely from scratch, making it is easier to prepare portions on the side.  You will list your dietary restrictions on the trip registration form prior to the trip, and we will use this information to shop accordingly. However, it is ESSENTIAL that you remind the guides of your restrictions PRIOR to meal preparation. When necessary, dishes and utensils will not be used to prepare or serve more than one dish. For more information on specific dietary restrictions, go to frequently asked questions.

Snacks are important to keep guests (especially kids) fueled and happy. The snacks we carry are limited in variety, so for “picky eaters” we recommend bringing snacks that will be welcomed.

  • Beverages

Beverages include:  Water, Lemonade, Iced Tea, Coffee, Hot Chocolate, Tea, Juices and an assortment of wines served with dinner (we plan for 2 glasses of wine per adult per evening).  We do NOT supply beer, sodas or other beverages, but you are welcome to bring your own. We’ll have coolers with ice set aside for guest drinks. Except for special bottles of wine or scotch, please do not bring glass.

Alcoholic beverages are not allowed on the river during the day and we asked that guests drink responsibly in camp.

  • Camping Gear

We supply all the group camping gear for the trip. This includes dining tables, chairs, shelter tarps (for rain and sun), hand-wash stations and  campfire set-up. The campsites we use for this trip have flush toilets and running water. Since we are essentially car-camping, you are not limited to space in a dry bag for personal gear.

Our tents sleep two comfortably and larger family-sized tents are available and will accommodate a family of four. Single travelers are not required to share a tent.

Sleeping bags are rectangular, flannel-lined 45° bags and are 34” x 84”. Sleeping bags are professionally laundered between trips.

Sleeping pads are heavy duty “Paco” pads and are 72” x 28” x 1.5”.

  • Cold or Rainy Trips

We do not cancel trips due to inclement weather. The detailed trip planner for your trip will include suggestions on the type of clothing to pack. Ouzel will provide splash jackets and splash pants, as well wetsuits and wetsuit booties if conditions warrant.

Despite the gear we provide, it is important for our guests to be prepared.  This means checking the weather and packing appropriately. Dressing in layers and AVOIDING COTTON will provide a good base layer that can be combined with our extra gear.

Lastly, it is wise to assume that every article of clothing you wear on the river will be soaked by the time you reach camp. You should be prepared to change into a completely dry set of clothes each afternoon (including socks & shoes).

“Jake and Max were excellent and provided a memorable experience. Some nice touches of food at lunch were appreciated. Although we were first time customers with Ouzel, we will be return customers when back in the Northwest.”                                                                                                                                                                            -Scott Jurgensen (N.
